Listen to Me
You fall deaf against my voice, but why?
I try to give you the words from my heart. I pour my feelings over your shoulders but your coldness freezes me and my words shatter to the ground. They shatter into a million pieces. There is no way to pull them back together. I watch you pick up a broom. You begin to sweep up the broken pieces and throw them in the trash. Listen to me. I beg. I beg you like a dog, I whimper and cry.Listen to my voice, please. But you don’t hear me. I scream at the top of my lungs, you don’t even flinch. I move into you closer right by your face. I look into your eyes. You stare ahead as if I’m not even there. I try to shove you back, I put all of my weight into you but I am the one who is thrown down. I fall to the ground grabbing at the air. I scream out your name and pull myself back up. I run to you and I grab your hand. It is bigger than mine and stronger and it waves me away like a fly. NO! Stop this! Right now! STOP! This time you look at me. You look right into my face. Your eyes follow the movement of my lips while I say that I’m sorry. I’m not sure what for, but you seem to understand. You smile. And despite my mind being flustered and blurry, I smile too. The world seems to build itself up around me. I’m sitting in bed. There are tears on my face. You are by my side saying everything is ok. I look around for a minute, sorting out my nightmare from reality. I look at you. “Listen to me?” I ask. You nod, “Of course, what is it?” I look into your deep eyes and say, “I love you.” You allow my words to dissolve into you. You break apart each word, each syllable, each letter. You let my voice echo through your ears, you enjoy the beauty of it. “I love you too.” You say. And your words coat my heart and carve a new layer into my soul. Listen to me, I had said. And listen you did.
